This year, Audi will finally release the top-end version of the beautiful A5. The S5, which was released last year, sports a V8 engine with 334 hp, dynamic dampers, Audi Drive Select and many other new features. Now, the RS5 will most probably be equipped with a V8 engine that produces some 450 hp, and the new, modified Audi S-Tronic which now includes a double-clutch transmission.

NEW YORK TIMES | A US Airways jetliner with 155 people aboard lost power in both engines, possibly from striking birds, after taking off from La Guardia Airport on Thursday afternoon. The pilot ditched in the icy Hudson River and all on board were rescued by a flotilla of converging ferries and emergency boats, the authorities said.

What might have been a catastrophe in New York — one that evoked the feel if not the scale of the Sept. 11 attack — was averted by a pilot’s quick thinking and deft maneuvers, and by the nearness of rescue boats, a combination that witnesses and officials called miraculous.

Willard Wigan is the creator of the world’s smallest sculptures, often taking months to complete one, working between heartbeats to avoid hand tremors. “You have to control the whole nervous system, you have to work between the heartbeat – the pulse of your finger can destroy the work.” Wigan uses a tiny surgical blade to carve microscopic figures out of gold, and fragments of grains of sand which are then mounted on pinheads. To paint his creations, he uses a hair plucked from a dead fly (the fly has to have died from natural causes, as he refuses to kill them for the sake of his art, preferring to decorate a glass sheet instead). His sculptures have included a Santa Claus and a copy of the FIFA World Cup trophy, both about 0.005mm (0.0002in) tall, and a boxing ring with Muhammad Ali figure which fits onto the head of a match.

Ferrari became the first team to unveil their 2009 car on Monday morning when Felipe Massa took the new-look F60 for a spin at the Mugello track in Italy.

The car – named as a way of celebrating the fact that Ferrari are the only team to have competed in each of the 60 years of the Formula One world championship – provides a glimpse of the look that will dominate a season that heralds the biggest Formula One rule changes in 25 years.
